Board Spotlight
By Zach Lewis, ISPA Second Vice President

imageGreetings from sunny Las Vegas! Well, it would actually be wishful thinking that I'm still there. Rick Host, Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) Secretary/Treasurer, and I attended the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) Pension and Benefits Conference held in Las Vegas February 8-10. The timing was impeccable as it was negative 10 degrees in Iowa as we boarded the plane to Vegas. While I thought it would be a good idea to put all the ISPA assets on a 1,000-1 pony named "Foot in Grave," but our ever-prudent treasurer put the kibosh to that. ISPA could have been very well off... just saying.

On the serious side, one main focus of the conference was the Defined Benefit (DB) vs. Defined Contribution (DC) debate...

Iowa's Heroes - Blaine Brinkmeyer

Iowa's Heroes is sponsored by Hy-Vee. Each of Iowa's Heroes featured in this and future editions of the ISPA Journal is awarded a $50 gift card in appreciation for their service, sacrifice and dedication to their communities. A special thank you to Hy-Vee for donating to this cause.

imageOn December 13, 2013, West Des Moines Police Officer Blain Brinkmeyer, a 16-year veteran, reported to duty not knowing the impact he would have on a local family that day. (Note: news stories mistakenly indicated Brinkmeyer was off duty at the time of this incident.) Stories like these occur throughout Iowa and the rest of the country on a regular basis - a police officer, on or off duty, uses his or her training to help someone else. But this story is a special example of the stars aligning to save a life.

New ISPA Member Benefit -
Discount on Haix Boots

Boots are a piece of required equipment for most police officers at some point in their career. They are also a piece of equipment that is rarely talked about unless they cause a problem. Unfortunately we usually choose a brand and style based more on price than quality and comfort. We have resigned ourselves to the expectation that a pair of boots will cost around $100, and the boot will last about a year. We have all had that pair of boots, and nothing makes a day (or night) on your feet more uncomfortable. A poorly constructed boot can also lead to injuries as the joints try to compensate for the boot not doing what is supposed to do.

Haix to the rescue! Many people have not heard of this German-based company. If you have, you probably quit looking after seeing the price tag. But take a second look, and you'll soon see that the quality is much higher than many other brands. That's why the Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) has developed a...

Finacial Planning - Helping You See the Big Picture
By Peter Hill ChFC, Investment Adviser Representative, Vision Financial Group

imageDo you picture yourself owning a new home, starting a business, or retiring comfortably? These are a few of the financial goals that may be important to you, and each comes with a price tag attached. That's where financial planning comes in. Financial planning is a process that can help you reach your goals by evaluating your whole financial picture, then outlining strategies that are tailored to your individual needs and available resources. Why is financial planning important? A comprehensive financial plan serves as a framework for organizing the pieces of your financial picture. With a financial plan in place, you'll be better able to focus on your goals and understand what it will take to reach them.

One of the main benefits of having a financial plan is that it can help you balance competing financial priorities. A financial plan will clearly show you how your financial goals are related--for example, how saving for your children's college education might impact your ability to save for retirement. Then you can use the information you've gleaned to decide how to prioritize your goals, implement specific strategies, and choose suitable products or services. Best of all, you'll have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your financial life is on track.

Legislative Update
By Paula Feltner, ISPA Lobbyistimage

The 2014 session of the 85th Iowa General Assembly convened on Monday, January 13th, and was scheduled to last until April 10th. It is expected to end close to the scheduled time for adjournment (the 100th day), which this year is April 22, 2014.

The Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) has had a very active and good year on the hill. First and foremost, it has been a pension year - every two years in the legislature, public pensions are examined and changes are made if needed or demanded. We are very excited to report that, with your help and grass roots efforts, up to this point we have been able to stave off changes to our pension system.

The only active bill at this point is Senate File 2233, which adds New Code Section 411.19 that provides for a state appropriation to the statewide...
