Some people refuse to admit that advertising affects their buying decisions. Marketers most everywhere disagree. The impact of national television advertising in past decades was particularly effective on viewers with items priced less than $10, and this is especially evident with candy bars. A look back at this seems especially timely with Halloween just around the corner.
With that in mind, our CITYVIEW poll question of the week asks readers to pick their favorite Halloween candy from choices of Kit Kat, M&M’s, Milky Way, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers or Twix. If you are like me, an “any of the above” would suffice.
Some of us spent too many hours of our youth in front of the TV watching too many syndicated episodes of shows like “The Brady Bunch,” “Gilligan’s Island,” “The Beverly Hillbillies” and “Hogan’s Heroes.” And during the breaks of those shows, we viewed thousands of commercials that were targeted directly to us. Candy bars were some of the most frequently advertised items. Here is your chance to recall some of those catchy slogans and match them to the candy bar. Then follow the links and get ready to sing along to their jingles:
1. Give me a break. Give me a break. Break me off a piece of that…
2. The milk chocolate melts in your mouth not in your hand…
3. At work, rest or play…
4. Two great tastes that taste great together…
5. Packed with peanuts…
6. The chocolate candy with the cookie crunch…
I hope you enjoyed this trip down candy bar memory lane. And if you didn’t, that’s OK, too. After all, sometimes you feel like a nut; sometimes you don't!
Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.
