Good Wednesday morning to you!

“It’s not what you’ve got; it’s what you use that makes a difference.”

Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar said that many times, and it’s worth repeating again here.

A few years back, we launched a series of local business journals to cover the happenings in the central Iowa communities of West Des Moines, Waukee, Johnston, Urbandale and Grimes. We mailed them to every business in each of these communities with the idea of launching more of these until we covered every community in central Iowa. I was proud of the content, the look, the design, the distribution and the readership. Unfortunately, the advertising didn’t catch on, and we had to change gears. Ultimately, the couple thousand in circulation of each individual publication wasn’t enough to garner advertising results for our customers. So we decided to take advantage of the 100,000 print and digital monthly readers of CITYVIEW— many who are business owners, operators and leaders in the communities we serve — and cover central Iowa business news. It worked.

One of the many things we learned with our individual business journals was the impact we could have by recognizing people. Since 2017, we have honored local business people who have positively affected their business communities, both large and small. Starting two years ago, we paid tribute to them in a story in the CITYVIEW Business Journal. With the COVID concerns, we opted to hold off on an event last year, but we are pleased to bring back a “21 from 2021” formal presentation this year.

In selecting these individuals, we sifted through hundreds of nominations and chose 21 who have truly been “business people making a difference.” The November issue of CITYVIEW’s Business Journal that highlights these honorees will be available starting today, and you can also view the honorees online at www.iowalbusinessjournals.com. Additional copies will be presented at the event, which will be held Thursday, Nov. 4 at Sherwood Forest Event Center, located at 7400 Hickman Road in Windsor Heights, from 5-7 p.m.

The honorees will receive a formal award and recognition at this event. If you are a friend, colleague or family member of any of these folks, or you simply wish to join in the celebration, feel free to stop by. There is no admission fee, but we do ask that you register in advance at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/21-from-2021-business-people-making-a-difference-tickets-170493273972.

On behalf of our event sponsors McGowen Hurst Clark Smith, Sherwood Forest Event Center, and Cyd’s Catering, we congratulate the honorees and thank them for all they have done. We hope you can make a difference by celebrating with us.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

CITYVIEW Food Dude Jim Duncan was invited to a "celebrity" sit down at Prairie Meadows with Maria Ho, often considered America's top ranked female poker player. Asked, "Does Mommy know that you gamble?" Maria answered, " Mommy and Daddy still think I wasted my life, not going to medical school. I made closer to $2 million than $1 million last year, and my parents still consider me a failure."

Meet Esther Paine:
Helps non-English speakers communicate

By Jackie Wilson

During a typical school day, Esther Paine hears up to 27 different languages spoken in her classrooms at Brookview Elementary and Woodland Hills.

Paine has been an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher for the past four years. As a child, she was interested in teaching, as she had great experiences with her own teachers. She taught first grade for three years then worked as a reading recovery and math interventionist for four years.

It was during her reading and math classes that she discovered the joy of working with English language learners.

“It was fascinating to see them develop in their language and help them develop their English language,” she says.
