Good Thursday morning to you!

So who exactly are these people at Big Green Umbrella Media? Well, by now, many of you know me, but I also want you to get to know the wonderful people who work “under the umbrella” at our locally owned media company. With all the Big Tech companies and out-of-state media corporations in the mix now who don’t know the difference between Waukee and Whittemore, it can be a challenge to know who is covering local news… and more importantly, why. So starting with this issue, and continuing once per week, I am going to introduce you to one of our staff members who live and work in central Iowa and contribute to the communities we are so proud and so fortunate to cover. I am confident that you will like them as much as I do.

Under the Umbrella

Meet Tammy Pearson. Tammy has been editor of our Iowa Living magazines for more than three years now and previously was a newspaper editor. She gets up bright and early to send your Daily Umbrella on its way. Yes, she is the one in charge of our Morning Chuckle. Her parents grew up in Boone and she grew up on Army bases. She earned her master's from Iowa State University. We suspect she's a "crazy cat lady." She's also a trustee of the Adair County Historical Museum, an Optimist, and, as a member of the Cumblerland Rose Players, has written and directed a play about the filming of "Cold Turkey" in Greenfield. She has also been champion of a fantasy football league for 4 of the last 6 years. She enjoys Korean movies, her comfy chair, and Sudoku-induced naps.

Meet Phil Nord

When Phil Nord began teaching at West Des Moines’ Walnut Creek Campus three years ago, he made a slight shift. As a 21-year teacher, he spent the majority of his time teaching at private schools. He sought out the alternative school as a greater opportunity to help kids.
“I have more opportunity to talk with people, rather than just another student,” he says. “I’ve been loving it here so far.”
He currently teaches algebra, math and geometry. He chose the mathematics field because of math’s accuracy.
