Good Wednesday morning to you!

The best of the best. That’s what we celebrated last night at the Palace Theater in Adventureland — live and in person! CITYVIEW’s Best Of Des Moines event was an incredible display of more than 900 folks who represented the people, places and events that CITYVIEW readers deemed as “the best.”

This was our 14th year for this type of event and nearly 25 years for our readers’ poll. Earning the title Best Of Des Moines by CITYVIEW readers is a great honor, which is obvious by the many Best Of Des Moines certificates that are proudly displayed in stores, restaurants, bars and offices.

This year’s Best Of Des Moines poll consisted of 288 questions that provided voters with the opportunity to fill in the blanks with open-ended responses. A total of 13,765 votes were cast this year — our second highest total ever. That’s more votes than a lot of city council or school board elections have.

The poll was broken out into six categories: Eats, Culture and Recreation, Shopping, Health & Beauty, Nightlife, and Best of the Rest. We highlighted each of the category winners with video presentations amid much applause, whistling, screaming and yelling — and I loved it.

Events like this would not happen without the financial support of some wonderful sponsors along with focused work from the staff of CITYVIEW and Big Green Umbrella Media. I also owe a special thanks to the event’s Pinnacle Sponsor, Bank Iowa.

As we have done today and in the past, we will feature the poll results from one category each day in the Daily Umbrella. You can also find all the results from the poll in CITYVIEW magazine at more than 750 metro locations, or you can view it online at www.dmcityview.com.

Some people say the best is yet to come. That may be true, and I truly hope it is. In the meantime, we can celebrate the best right now.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

DeVerne Dixon’s cars hold a place in his heart and memory

By Becky Kolosik

DeVerne Dixon’s passion for cars dates back to his teenage years. You’ve likely seen him (and other family members) behind the wheels of his 1929 Fargo Packet, 1947 Mercury and 1965 Buick Riviera in local parades.

At 93, Dixon has owned many cars over the years, and each represents a specific time or memory — like the 1940 Ford his dad bought when he was a newly licensed high school junior.

“Dad was a salesman, and when he was home on the weekends, I’d get to drive it,” Dixon recalls. “I quickly found out I could outrun all of my buddies’ cars.”
