“Da Doo Ron Ron.”
This popular song written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector was a top five hit for The Crystals in 1963. Teen idol Shaun Cassidy covered the song in 1977, and his version hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. And now you can hear Cassidy sing it and his other hits at Hoyt Sherman Place on Friday, June 17.
What? Who is Shaun Cassidy, you ask?
For those of you younger than me, you should know that Shaun Cassidy was the Justin Bieber of his day, but squeaky clean, as far as we know. While still in high school, Cassidy signed a contract with Warner Brothers records that led to three multi-platinum albums and numerous top 10 hits not only including “Da Doo Ron Ron” but also “That's Rock n’ Roll,” “Hey Deanie” and “Do You Believe In Magic?” He earned a Grammy nomination for his efforts.
Cassidy’s popularity also rolled over to the TV screen, as he starred alongside Parker Stevenson and Pamela Sue Martin in the television series “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries” that aired on ABC from 1977 to 1979.
He went on to create, write and/or produce a number of critically acclaimed television series including “American Gothic,” “Roar,” “Cold Case,” “Cover Me,” “The Agency,” “Blue Bloods,” “Invasion,” and “Emerald City.” Cassidy currently serves as executive producer and writer for the NBC series “New Amsterdam.”
For those of you who are a bit older than me, Shaun Cassidy is the half-brother of the late David Cassidy of “The Partridge Family” fame, a popular ABC TV show that ran on Friday nights from 1970-1974. Shirley Jones, also of “The Partridge Family,” is his mother.
Even so, most will remember Shaun Cassidy for his bubble gum songs, his good looks and his hair style that influenced a generation of young boys, including this one. Yes, he sported it better, which explains why he was on the covers of Tiger Beat, Seventeen and Dynamite magazines, and I am on the Daily Umbrella.
Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.
