Good Monday morning to you!

It’s puzzling. The whole puzzle thing. I remember my parents spending hours on the winter weekends working on jigsaw puzzles and seemingly enjoying it. Snow was falling outside, but it was cozy in the house. Slippers were on their feet. Hot coffee was in their hands. Smiles were on their faces. They were as relaxed as they could be looking over all those pieces and trying to find a fit. This teenager couldn’t think of anything that could possibly be a greater waste of time. Several decades have passed by, and I found myself with slippers on my feet and a cup of coffee in my hands working on a 1,000-piecer while the snow gently fell outside. And, admittedly, I found it relaxing. What in the world happened? Yes, it’s puzzling. But don’t let these late season snowstorms get you down. Turn off the TV, put your phone away and open up a jigsaw puzzle box.

Have a marvelous Monday, and thanks for reading.

Personalities

Meet Christel Oberbroeckling: School nurses do much more than administer Band-aids.

... “Each day is different at the elementary, and it keeps me on my toes. I remember when I accepted the position 17 years ago, a nurse I used to work with commented, ‘Won't that position just entail placing Band-aids and checking hair?’ She couldn't have been more wrong. I have learned so much in this nursing position,” Oberbroeckling says.
Each day typically consists of medication administration, office visits that require assessments and possible referrals, collaboration with staff and health-care providers, communication with parents, health screenings, immunization compliance and more. Oberbroeckling says that they are fortunate to have a nurse in every building working with students and families. She also says that her position sometimes involves out-of-the-box thinking and is rewarding when children succeed in the classroom.

A classic tale of a family road trip, “Leaving Iowa,” is the story of a writer, Don, who returns home to find a final resting place for his father’s ashes. When he discovers his grandmother’s house is now a grocery store, Don travels across Iowa, along with his own son, searching for a proper resting place for his father. The road-trip transitions smoothly between Don’s present predicament and his memories of the torturous but hilarious annual family vacations with Mom, Dad and Sis. With his father’s help, Don realizes that the journey really is as important as the destination.
