Good Monday Morning to You!

When we first launched The Daily Umbrella about a year ago, one of the areas that I thought we could help our readers and advertisers with was employment. It was a real challenge for employers to find employees then, and it still is today. We do publish some help wanted ads in our magazines, but they most all publish monthly and employers want someone hired today. With that in mind, we posted job openings on this newsletter each weekday morning for free — free for the job seeker to view and free for the job poster to place. We continue to do that with each issue. So how do we make money at it? We don’t, but that’s OK. We will figure that out later.

Through the process, I learned what many of you would say was clearly obvious: there aren’t enough people who are available, able or willing to work to fill all the job openings that exist. Employers know that they have to compete with other employers and attract employees who are already working elsewhere and may not be actively looking right now. They need to find ways to reach these folks or their friends or their family members or anyone who might encourage them to apply.

By posting jobs each day on The Daily Umbrella, we hope to help in that way. But we also learned that the job posting board needs to be simple to use and deliver quick responses. If you have placed any employment ads on the behemoth job boards in recent months, you know how complicated, cumbersome and costly they have become. So we created a new site that is simple, searchable and stress-free for everyone involved. It will continue to be a free service, and we hope that job seekers and job posters find it helpful. And, as always, we do not track or sell your personal data to anyone. Ever.

Check out the job board here and let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas on how we can make this even more beneficial to all involved. And, if you are an employer and have an opening, post it today.

Have a marvelous Monday, and thanks for reading.

COLD TURKEY
Residents share their experiences of quitting smoking.

By Lindsey Giardino

Karen Alles began smoking in 1965 mostly as the result of peer pressure and “wanting to be cool.” Over the years, she bought countless generic non-menthol filtered cigarettes.
She was a heavy smoker from then until 2003. That year, she had a wake-up call in the form of a nightmare.

“I dreamed my little granddaughter, Taylor, was standing over my grave crying hysterically and screaming, ‘You killed my grandma,’ ” Alles says. “The next day, the shopper came with an article for a class called Freedom from Smoking, which was offered by our local hospital and taught by Kim Hulbert. I called and enrolled. With God’s help, I followed the steps and quit on April 23, 2003, and have not smoked since.”
