I am hoping that, by the time you read this, our “migration” problem is resolved. But as of me writing this on Wednesday afternoon, our company websites are still down. Or, as the site messages say, “403 Forbidden,” whatever that means.
A few weeks ago, we noticed that some of our websites were loading slowly. As we explored the reasons why, we learned we were nearing our storage capacity on the server we pay Go Daddy to store our files on. Part of the solution, we were told, was to either delete files from the server and/or upgrade to more storage. We did both.
Five days later, our files are still “migrating” to the new server. Birds and animals migrate. Files move. Or at least they should. When we inquired with Go Daddy on why this “migration” was taking so long, the process apparently started all over again. Uggh.
Fortunately, the vast majority of our readership and our revenue does not come from digital, and we host this newsletter and other digital offerings on other servers. But it is still frustrating. I can’t imagine how a 100% online merchant would feel in this situation with his or her business put on a multi-day pause.
Situations like this make me think how vulnerable so many businesses are while being dependent upon the Internet. We just assume it will always be there. If a terrorist really wanted to wipe this country out financially, attacks on the primary data facilities in the nation would be a good start. That’s scary.
Many of us are convinced that our personal and business data is secure. We are a very trusting people. For the most part, the data probably is safe, but situations like we are facing right now make me wonder.
Let that migrate through your brain today.
Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.
