Good Wednesday Morning to You!

Today is May 4, and that means one thing: It’s Star Wars Day.

The legions of fans who hail this galaxy-wide celebration are known to greet each other with the phrase, “May the fourth be with you,” a play on the words “May the force be with you,” which were used by Jedi masters in the “Star Wars” movies.

The origins of the “May the fourth be with you” phrase date back to 1978 and were apparently used originally as a Fourth of July greeting. The following year, May 4 became the unofficial “Star Wars” holiday. Some say May 4 date evolved from Margaret Thatcher’s election win in Britain, as her party placed an ad in the May 4, 1979, issue of The London Evening News that stated, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!”

May 4 was observed unofficially for a few decades until California lawmakers declared the date as Star Wars Day in recognition of Disneyland’s Galaxy’s Edge opening in 2019.

The diehard Star Wars fans also know that May is an important month for the franchise, as the original “Star Wars” movie premiered on May 25, 1977, and its creator, George Lucas, celebrates his birthday on May 14.

Few film series have influenced multiple generations as the “Star Wars” movies have. Although I don’t consider myself a fanatic, I have seen each of the films, and each is incredible in its own way. I am amazed when I learn about someone who has not seen any of the films. To each, his or her own, I guess. As Yoda said, “Your path you must decide.”

As for me, I will be celebrating tonight by viewing a VHS tape of “The Empire Strikes Back” … assuming I can find a VHS player.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Norwalk girls take on state wrestling

First year of Norwalk girls competing in state tournament

By Lindsey Giardino

It’s been four years since the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association created a state tournament for high school girls. This year, though, is the first that Norwalk had any students compete at the tournament.

Maddy Lepley and Madeline Benge traveled to Iowa City this past January, where they had the experience of a lifetime.

Says Benge, “Making it to the girls state wrestling tournament was something I never thought I would do. When Coach [Jake] Brown asked if I wanted to do it, I knew I had to say yes to take this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I went out on the mat with confidence and gave it my all.”
