“I haven't carried coins in years (Pocket change, June 20, 2022). If I come home with coins, I throw them in a cup. When the cup is full, I donate them to a charity. I’m old enough to remember buying penny candy, taking it to junior high and selling it two or three for a nickel. In a few cases, I remember buying for a nickel and selling for a dime. Thanks for the memory!” – Chuck
Chuck, I have a feeling you were a master at “heads I win; tails you lose.” - Shane
“Hi, Shane. My parents had red shag carpet in their bedroom in the early 1970s with a white fur bedspread (Stories of Mom, June 21, 2022). It's a trauma I'm still trying to get past.” – Lee
I would guess that your silk shirt and bell bottoms of the day matched it quite well. Thanks for the vision, Lee. - Shane
“In the 1970s and early 1980s, we had red shag carpet in our family room, which for some reason was called the recreation or rec room (Stories of Mom, June 21, 2022). We also had a carpet rake to keep it looking fresh. LOL.” – Hoffman
You had to have something to rake that spilled fondue cheese up with. - Shane
“Your comment about SLICE reminded me about that drink (Sliced Bread, June 22, 2022). Then while taking my wife shopping for ‘treasures’ in Okoboji last week, I saw a Teem sign and thought about Slice. Made me hanker for an RC and a Grape Crush.” – Brad
All of those certainly tasted better than Tab. And, just remember, A&W Root Beer’s got that frosty mug taste. - Shane
“Good morning, Shane. I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your ‘perspective.’ Today's hit home as the Great Depression was a part of life for my parents and grandparents (Perspective, June 27, 2022). They did not waste anything. They saved to buy a big purchase and didn't abuse credit cards. They were experts at recycling before they knew it had a name. Perspective at its best is parking next to a brand new full-size truck with all the perks at the gas station on an absolutely beautiful day, in a country of freedoms, with well-paying jobs galore, having recently survived a devastating pandemic. And the topic of the day — you guessed it — high gas prices! How quickly we've forgotten the gratitude we felt when we started to emerge from the dark days of the last two years of incredible loss of life, illness, hardship, loss of jobs and businesses, and survival for the lucky. Keep those columns coming!” - Sue
We all need a dose of reality from time to time. Thank you for reminding us of that, Sue. – Shane
