Good Monday morning to you!

I have a dog. His name is Kobie. And I like him a lot. But as much as I care for him, he is still a dog. So if I had to make a choice between my dog receiving a COVID-19 vaccination or a person, there is no question that I would choose the human. I am sure many of you agree with me, and I am most certain that some of you don’t. People love their pets.
   But what about apes?
The Boston Globe reported last week that the San Diego Zoo vaccinated nine great apes for the coronavirus after a troop of gorillas in its Safari Park became infected. The story stated that the vaccine was created by a firm that produces medicine for animals, and that it is experimental. The story was not clear on this, but I am assuming that this vaccine is not the same as what humans receive. Even so, it has to be similar, and there has undoubtedly been much time and money put into this cause.
Now before you send me nasty animal rights responses, let me be clear — I don’t have anything against apes. In fact, I have seen all their movies. We even published a wonderful story on apes in our city in April of 2009 that you should be sure to check out (www.dmcityview.com/archives/2009/04apr/04.02.09/cover.shtml). But speaking as someone who has not yet been vaccinated, I find this ape vaccinating a bit disturbing, especially as people continue to die from this pandemic.
If you are curious, the Boston Globe story also stated that "the gorillas had symptoms ranging from runny noses to coughing and lethargy, but they are recovering." Thank goodness.
Have a marvelous Monday, and, as always, thanks for reading.

Joe Logsdon at La Mie

Joe Logsdon is owner of the French-style bakery and café La Mie. He is part of a local restaurant family that also includes his brother Steve (Lucca) and nephew Andy (Basil Prosperi). I asked him to lunch recently, and he picked La Mie since he was working that day. We ordered in the bakery and moved down two doors south to a new La Mie annex, a comfortable room that allows more social distancing than the main bay. Over coffee and croissants (it was too late for Joe’s favorite green quinoa), we talked about the state of the restaurant art in the year of the viral nastiness.
