Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag, where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, thank you for your article on Big Tech (Leery, Aug. 15, 2022). I agree with you, and I am very skeptical of Big Tech’s motives. They want money, control and power over individuals and society. Great article.” - Moe

Unfortunately, Big Tech is continuing to get all of those things — at least for now. - Shane

“In response to your something new column (First time, Aug. 16, 2022), I suffered through COVID and, thankfully, was vaxed and boosted to mitigate the duration of whatever strain. … I reunited with a longtime hometown buddy following my class reunion, which I was unable to attend due to COVID. … I tried a new adult beverage that wasn't a beer or a liquor. Not saying I enjoyed it. … I borrowed a lawn garden tool from a neighbor instead of just going out and buying one. … I didn't call a Lyft, Uber, cab or super shuttle to take my wife to the airport for a 4 a.m. flight this week. On second thought, that may have not been one of my better ideas.” - Rex

Whew. I am tired reading the new things you have done. Can I borrow your chainsaw? - Shane

“I thoroughly enjoyed your column this morning, regarding the high school sports scrapbook (Scrapbook journalism, Aug. 22, 2022). As a small town newspaper editor/reporter/photographer, I agree wholeheartedly with the need to cover local high school sports, and we strive to do so as much as possible. With that in mind, I wondered if I might reprint your column in our paper next week, as a reminder to our readers of the issues involved.” - Carol from Minnesota

Reprint as you see fit. Thanks, Carol, and keep up the good work! - Shane

“Our weekly hometown (Danbury) newspaper has good sports coverage, and that is probably one reason it still is in business in a town of 400 (Scrapbook journalism, Aug. 22, 2022). Yes, I said 400, not 4,000. Parents have pride in their children’s accomplishments and love to see their child’s picture in the paper or the number of points their child scored in a game.” - George

Sounds like those folks could teach a thing or two to those in charge at the corporate-owned newspapers. Keep subscribing! - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Meet Megan Hamilton

Teaching summer school and junior high science

By Jackie Wilson

While some teachers take the summers off, Megan Hamilton remained in the classroom for a four-week session.

This summer, she taught sixth-grade remedial reading.

“The incoming junior high graders need some extra support for reading, writing and language. This session really works well to track growth and expand their skills,” she says.
Megan begins her fourth year this fall as an eighth-grade science teacher at Indian Hills Junior High School. Initially, she resisted the teaching field, as her family was in the profession.
