Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag, where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I did a little research and found out symmetry in faces is preferred but rare (Symmetry, Aug. 24, 2022). Then, there was an article by a photographer who did an experiment with cloning one side of the face to the other. Pretty funny! And our bodies actually start out asymmetrical with the heart being off to the left creating a smaller lung on the left side and a larger one on the right, etc. That being said, I always knew I was off kilter. Now I know I am probably just normal.” – Sue

The human face is symmetrical enough for me. When we start growing a third eye, I will get concerned. – Shane

“I enjoyed your comments about always stopping at stoplights and stop signs, and your experience with the officer when you failed to come to a complete stop (Stoplights, Aug. 25, 2022). It reminded me of a family doctor who practiced in a neighboring little town many decades ago. When Doc Jongewaard would be answering a call or on his way to the hospital in an emergency, he would come upon a stop sign, quickly verify that no other cars were in the vicinity, and roll through without coming to a complete stop. This became known as a “Jongewaard rolling stop.” I doubt that any police officer would have given him a ticket.” – Bob

Breaking laws and saving lives. – Shane

“Not sure if you realized that the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain. (Songs about rain, Aug. 30, 2022). Thought you should know.” – Bruce

That is insane. – Shane

“What about ‘Raining Blood’ by Slayer? (Songs about rain, Aug. 30, 2022). Daddy always said stay away from that devil music. The song begins with the soothing sound of falling rain and thunder, but once the ominous drum triplet begins, you know you’ve done wrong. Hell awaits.” – Darrold

I wouldn’t play that backwards, if I were you. – Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Volunteering a way of life for Wager

Desire to serve others comes from within.

By Lindsey Giardino

Stefanie Wager has lived in Grimes her entire life, except for when she taught abroad in Mexico City for a year. In fact, her family was one of the first to settle in Grimes. Her great-great-great grandpa John Rosenberg arrived in town in the late 1800s.

Wager was raised to believe in the importance of giving back and helping those who need it. She has volunteered formally since she was a high school student, first at homeless shelters and then at hospitals in Des Moines.

Wager received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2000 and the Governor's Volunteer Leadership Award in 2007 for volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).
