Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag, where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I was a football player at Algona High School in the early 1970s (Scrapbook journalism, Aug. 22, 2022). Mary Hannover had given me a scrapbook after my senior season. I kept this for the past 45 years. In addition to the amazing amount of work that she put in to making the binder, what was most cool to me was that she included articles from the opposing teams' newspapers, some from towns 90 miles away. While I probably didn't appreciate it as much as I should have at the time, I have periodically thought about the wonderful effort that she put in; a woman who didn't even know me gave me such a wonderful remembrance.” - Mick

The memories of Mary Hannover will live on long past her years on this earth. Thank you for the note, Mick. - Shane

“If you disagree with someone, walk a mile in their shoes (I’ve been in your shoes, Aug. 29, 2022). If that doesn’t help, at least you’re a mile away from them and you have their shoes.” – Lori

I understand just what you’re going through. Maybe. OK, probably not. – Shane

You forgot “ ‘After The Rain’ by Nelson (Rain songs, Aug. 30, 2022). Who can forget the Nelson twins? Everyone, that’s who. Their blonde matching manes were a sight to behold, but the music …. eh ….. what was the topic here again?” – Darwin

The topic was matching manes. You win, Darwin. - Shane

“You gotta include The Cascades and ‘Rhythm Of The Falling Rain’ (Rain songs, Aug. 30, 2022). – Kirk

I can’t believe I missed that one. Tell me just what a fool I've been. - Shane

“You forgot my favorite song about rain. ‘No Rain’ by Blind Melon (Rain songs, Aug. 30, 2022). The 1990s are my favorite musical era. Not for everybody, but give it a listen. The video is a part of pop culture. – Kelly

I prefer Blind Melon Chitlin, but that’s just me. - Shane

“How about Willie Nelson’s ‘Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,’ Waylon Jennings’ ‘Rainy Day Woman,’ Eric Clapton’s ‘Let it Rain’ (Rain songs, Aug. 30, 2022)?” - Erwin

Two out of three ain’t bad. – Shane

You never mentioned ‘Rainy Days and Mondays’ by the Carpenters (Rain songs, Aug. 30, 2022). When I began reading your article, that was the first song I thought of.” – Diane

Sorry, that song always gets me down. – Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

By T.K. West

Originally from Urbandale, Megan Weaver earned her teaching degree from the University of Iowa before earning a master’s degree from Viterbo University. She began teaching with the Bondurant-Farrar Community School District as a resource teacher before transitioning to fifth grade where she continues to teach today. Now, starting this upcoming school year, Weaver will transition her classroom from Anderson Elementary School to the Intermediate School.

“I am also looking forward to getting to see my former fifth graders in the hallways next year. This is something I have not had in previous years as they moved on from Anderson Elementary to the former Middle School,” Weaver says.
