Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, I loved the piece about aprons (History of aprons, Nov. 9, 2022)! We have a local lady who travels giving presentations on things of the past — aprons, outhouses, etc. to clubs, nursing homes, wherever. Took me a bit, but I finally got her email and forwarded that article to her. I am sure she will enjoy reading this. Thanks for your daily email that is always interesting and/or thought-provoking.” - Diane

Outhouses? Now there’s a future column idea I should sit down and think about! – Shane

“Good morning, Shane. I read your column (Jammin’ Me, Oct. 20, 2022). I liked it and wanted to comment on what I would appreciate, too. I am not sure how many years ago cigarette commercials were taken off the air. Many issues were cited being underage smoking, cancer, addiction and probably more. So I suggest that any alcohol-related commercials be taken off the air and replace them with the explanation of how many people die and kill others from alcohol-related car accidents, addiction, broken families, etc.” - Sarah

Very good points, but you’re jammin’ me. – Shane

“Hi, Shane. Nice column today on Christmas decorations (Putting up the tree, Nov. 16, 2022). It seems the older we get, the earlier the decorations come out of storage. At least in our house. It makes me think of the time I dropped by to see neighbors a few years ago. This was in April. Christmas decorations, including the tree, filled the living room. I asked them the obvious question, and the elderly lady had a great answer. ‘I leave them up because I think they're pretty and I like looking at them. Why keep them in boxes 11 months out of the year?’ Why, indeed?” - John

How true. I love it. Thanks for the note, John, and Merry Christmas a bit early. – Shane

“Shane, a while back, I stumbled across an issue of your Waukee Living magazine. I had requested copies to send to my siblings and promptly received them in the mail from you a few days later. I appreciate what you and Big Green Umbrella are providing. It is beneficial to me as I am out of town and make fewer returns to Waukee. Thanks again for the great work in keeping us connected and up to date.” - Joe

All of us at BGUM are glad you enjoy what we do, and I appreciate your taking the time to say so. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Meet Gage Harden

Teaching special education at the middle school.

By T.K. West

Originally from Missouri, Gage Harden moved to Iowa with his wife, an Adel-DeSoto-Minburn alumni. When he first relocated to the state in 2013, he took a job as an associate working with special needs students at Adel Elementary School. He then completed his education degree and returned to the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Community School District to teach special education.

“ADM has amazing staff members. From the administrative team to the teachers and associates, the staff truly cares about each kid and each other. ADM is who they are because of a team that collaborates well together and brings learning to all,” Harden says.

As a middle school special education teacher, Harden says his students are beginning to find out who they are as a person but are still so eager to work in a classroom. He also says that it is fun to begin developing lasting relationships with his students as well as help them discover who they are and what they wish to do with their lives.
