Good Thursday morning to you!

I am frequently asked how we came up with the name Big Green Umbrella Media. The original (actually, not-so-original) name of our company was Greater Des Moines Publishing Company. When we reorganized in 2004, we decided to develop a new name and tie into an iconic image that represented Des Moines. We came up with the umbrella. Here’s why.
Many of you are familiar with the Crusoe Umbrella art sculpture in downtown Des Moines. The 37-foot by 37-foot by 58-foot steel sculpture was installed on Nov. 27, 1979, and remains in what is now known as Cowles Commons. You should also recognize the red Travelers Insurance umbrella in the Des Moines skyline. The 50-foot-wide by 40-foot-tall sign was erected in 1963 on top of the Insurance Exchange Building at Fifth and Grand Avenue. It was the logo for the Travelers Insurance Company until the design was dropped in 1995. A few years down the road, the insurance company was acquired by Citigroup, which kept the umbrella logo but sold the insurance company. The sign was neglected over the years until the fall of 2005 when the Graham Group, owner of the Insurance Exchange Building where the sign sits, took over its maintenance.
Structural images aside, the purpose of an umbrella is to provide coverage, which is exactly what we do for our readers and advertisers.
The color green is the color of growth in nature. It means “go” on a stoplight. And it is the color of our paper money system, a true symbol of commerce.
So now you know the meaning behind the green umbrella.
Have a thrilling Thursday, and, as always, thanks for reading.

Under the Umbrella

Pat Checketts is the advertising manager for CITYVIEW Magazine and has been with our company since October of 2020. Prior to coming to CITYVIEW, he worked in ad production and trafficking at Meredith Corporation and prior to that had a 14-year career in advertising with a couple local newspapers in southeast Nebraska. (We don't hold his time in Nebraska against him since some of us also spent time across the river.) He is a 2004 graduate of Wayne State College in Wayne, America (Go Wildcats! MEOWWW). In his spare time, he likes to take up new hobbies like woodworking, print making, and he enjoys cooking with his wife, Jennifer. (Latest tally, since Pat has no dogs or cats: 7 cats and 10 dogs "Under the Umbrella." Two Cyclones, one Beaver, one Ram, one Hawkeye and one Wildcat.)

Building their own dream home:
Home builders move into their own enviable home.

By Lindsey Giardino

If you’ve headed north out of Polk City in the direction of Sheldahl over the past few months, you’ve no doubt seen the gorgeous, sprawling, dark-exterior home sitting just on the edge of town.
That modern farmhouse beauty belongs to Jill and Brooks Rolling, who not only live there with their three kids, but run their business, Black Birch Homes and Design, from it as well.
The couple has lived in Polk City for about nine years and built their new house last year. They’d been looking for a larger property where they could consolidate their home and business — they previously had storage units at a number of different locations — and found the perfect place on the tip of Polk City. The lot was a spacious one but had an old home on it already, so, for the first few months after acquiring the property last February, the Rollings lived in that house while their new one was being built just steps away.
