Good Monday morning to you!

My friend Kirk and I were involved in a community rec sand volleyball league several years ago in Grimes. We were installing the nets one year in preparation for the season. Kirk was on a ladder, and I was pulling on the top string to give him the proper tension. Kirk yelled down to me, “Give me some pressure!” I instinctively replied, “Hurry up! Hurry up!” Kirk fell off the ladder laughing.
I thought of this story recently, as it is a vivid reminder of two things we all need to do more of in life. The first is to minimize our exposure to things that give us undue pressure. Yes, a little pressure is good, and, no, we won’t be able to avoid it completely, but pressure creates stress, and stress is rarely good. Just ask any cardiologist.
The second is to laugh more — not just a half-smile, but a good old belly laugh. People who laugh more feel less stress. And, again, that’s a good thing. So laugh more. Just don’t do it when you are on a ladder.
Have a marvelous Monday, and thanks for reading.

Dreams of a lifetime:
Kubalsky publishes her first children’s book

By Darren Tromblay

Sherry Kubalsky is living proof that you can take the girl out of the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the girl.
The Ankeny resident grew up in the rural community of Greene among a myriad of gravel roads, pickup trucks and Holstein cattle.
But Kubalsky, unlike her surroundings, was anything but typical. The now-retired hospice social worker with a master’s degree always had that “thing” about her. She’s an explorer.
“I thought that, when I retired some day, I’d like to write children’s books,” she says, "and take drum lessons. So now I’m doing both.”
At 68.
