Good Friday morning to you!

Do you remember the first website you ever visited? If you are like me, it was probably America Online (AOL) or Netscape. It’s hard to believe that we had to insert a CD to download the software so we could surf the Internet — and it wasn’t that long ago.
The world’s first website was built in 1991. Today, there are nearly two billion sites on the Internet.
With all this in mind, we started a new website. You are participating in it right now, in a roundabout way. The traditional logic for a digital publishing project was to start with a website and then branch out into email, social media and other efforts. Today, some companies are skipping the website and going directly to email or social media marketing. There is a business risk in not owning a website and relying on Facebook as a sole digital presence, but some are willing to roll that dice. Meanwhile, with the Daily Umbrella, we launched with email only and then promoted it in our publications and social media. And now, we are rolling out our website, www.thedailyumbrella.com.
It is a very simple site with today’s news and information along with links on how to subscribe, how to contact us and how to access our full archive of past Daily Umbrella emails. We realize that some people simply don’t want more email and would prefer to link directly to a website. If you are one of those folks, then this website is for you. Please check it out and let me know what you think.
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

FROM WHO-TV 13: DNR: Black Bears Could Make Iowa Their Home in the Near Future

IOWA — Springtime has arrived in the Midwest and with it comes mating season and some surprise visitors to Iowa that shouldn’t be so surprising anymore. In recent years sightings of black bears in northeast Iowa are becoming more common. That isn’t a coincidence. The DNR says that as black bear populations in Minnesota and Wisconsin continue to grow, so will the area that the animals call home. ““Within the next three to five years, I think we can expect to see cubs show up and a small breeding population become established,” says Vince Evelsizer with the Iowa DNR.  READ MORE FROM WHO-TV

FROM WOI-DT Local 5: 'Don't answer': Iowa AG's office says ignore numbers you don't know if possible to fight robocalls

DES MOINES, Iowa — More than 100 million robocalls were placed on phones in Iowa just this year according to robocall tracker YouMail, and it's safe to say all of us are getting pretty fed up.  "Unfortunately, bogus nonprofits and warranty operations are the top offenders," said Lynn Hicks with the Iowa Attorney General's Office. "The only penalty for violating this section is a serious misdemeanor, which can only be pursued in criminal court by a county attorney." ... READ MORE FROM WOI-DT Local 5

Ritchhart helps find missing pets:
Is your pet on the loose? Grimes Pet Retrievers is at the ready.

By Lindsey Giardino

The genesis of Grimes Pet Retrievers happened back in July 2019, when Katie Ritchhart, the group’s founder, heard a report of a missing dog in Grimes.
She saw a picture of the canine, which looked a lot like one of her own.
“It absolutely broke my heart,” Ritchhart recalls. “I didn’t know this dog, but I just got thinking, what if this was my dog? I would hope that people would be out trying to help me find my dog.”
So she did just that. Even though she has a full-time job, Ritchhart dedicated her nights and spare time to searching for the pup. For 10 days, she spent so much time trying to help find it that she got sunburn on her eyes.
